The Elder Scrolls (I): An Introduction.

"A prisoner born on a certain day to uncertain parents". So it began. This is a love story. It's about how I fell in love with the Elder Scrolls Saga, a videogame series which built a world inside my head, and made it evolve through the centuries.
Knight of the Nine

This is told from a personal point of view, so I hope you wouldn't mind if I don't speak of the two first installments, Arena and Daggerfall, which I have never played.

The Elder Scrolls Saga always put you in the skin of a prisoner who discovers that he (or she) is more than what meets the eye, that some special destiny is upon him, and this idea, of mixing destiny and free will, it's what has built its greatness to me. Because you find before you a great open world, full of opportunities, ripe for the taking... and some path that it's written for you, but you decide how the story unfolds.

Also, having the several games taking place in different countries and centuries each one makes the world feel like something alive, that grows outside the boundaries of your perception of the world of Tamriel, where your legend is told.

Your power to decide what will you do, where you will go, who will you confront... possibilities are seemingly endless. You can deviate from the main quest, even forget it almost as you walk or ride or fly through Tamriel.

In this series of articles I will tell you my personal experience with this videogames, and what have I adapted from them for tabletop roleplaying games.

Exercising your creative muscles: 24 women

Sometimes you need to strecht a little your creative muscles, and improve areas where you are not so good as you would like. This exercise could be of help there (or maybe not, but anyway, it's fun).

Take a big sheet of paper and prepare to do 24 (or as much as you can fit without feeling like the sheet cramped with them) of the thing you fear to draw or want to improve. It's better to get just a part of a figure, or maybe the complete figure if you can simplify it and make it small enough (but can still appreciate the movement, nevertheless).

My weapon of choice were... women faces. They didn't need to be pretty, didn't need to be ugly, didn't need to be anything but women faces. I also decided (unconsciously) that the first of each couple would be a serious/sad/angry one, and the second would look happier/friendlier/nicer.

So I went to the street and while I was waiting for someone to fetch me, I started doodling. And looking at women's noses to get inspired as they walked by. I hadn't but a few seconds to get a hold on how their noses were and to put them in paper!

As I said, lots of fun.

Mechanical pencil.

Improving creativity

(En español abajo)

To boost creativity. That's something that drives nuts a lot of authors. Wherther you're a musician, illustrator, writer, there'll always be elements and actions that could make your creative energy grow, and which thrusts your art to a new level. It's clear to see that everyone is a world apart, and you should find which ones work for you, but to start with the search, here we have some that have worked for friends or for myself. You'll find contradictions (as we said, some will work better for you than others) but I hope that they'll be some help at the time of finding your own method. Good Luck!

*Find a nice spot

Some people need a kind of "special place" to let their creativity to run through them and go wild. Maybe it's your case. Find a place in your home that is comfortable, well lit and not very noisy. A place where you feel at ease and safe to let your creative energy materialize in something concrete.
Maybe it's just a cushion on a sofa, or maybe you need a room set as a workshop, with all your tools and working surfaces at hand's reach. Wherever you feel like "your place to work", will be nice.

A friend of mine actually sits on a sofa of his living room to write. I can work wherever it takes, depending on the task, but I prefer to do it at home, in my room, where my drawing board lays with all my pencils, brushes, and so, and my PC, so I have all my tools in the same place.

*Silence, music, background noise:

I suppose that it depends on the person, and on the moment. Some people tend to get distracted when there's complete silence around them (me being one of them). Most people can't concentrate with very loud noises. You should find which level of noise works better for you.

I've found a couple of webpages that give an adequate noise level and seem to work very well in improving my concentration: http://coffitivity.com/ and http://rainycafe.com/ Both of them replicate the noise of a coffe shop, just in the background, and rainycafe also lets you add the sound of rainfall. As I said, I find them useful, but a friend of mine felt the coffeshop buzz a little distracting.

Music is other part of this. Some people need to hear music every hour. To others is a source of systematic distraction. ¿For me? Don't play it too loud, but it keeps company, although sometimes I need to cut it off. Sometimes not. As usual, depends on the day.

*Inspirational sources:

The creative mind is like an sponge, sometimes you need to soak up the creative juices before you can put yourself to create something new. This creative juice can come from everywhere or everything. It's a 50%-50% thing with documentation (in fact, documentation can be seen as a functional source of inspiration if anything), so reading a lot (not only one kind of books, or only books about one matter), watch and analyze movies, listen music, but also taking a stroll through the park or the city, going to the countryside, travel, meeting people, talking to people you know, all of then could fire the spark of creativity. The experiences are what make your life worth living, and they strenghten your imagination, as you have more basis for your fantasy.

Dare to know. Investigate. Inquire. Be curious. Let yourself bathe in the raw power of life.

At least, if it doesn't spark your creativity, you'll have a good time.

*Your working time:

Some of us are best suited to work on certain times of the day. Are you a day or a night person? Do you notice that you work and concetrate better at the evening, at the breaking of dawn or in the wee small hours of night? Although it's possible to get used to change your best performance schedule, if you can it's usually better to work when you body fell more ready to.

So maybe you paying work occurs during the morning and you are the most creative at the afternoon or the evening. That would be an ideal situation. I'm more of a night person, but  circunstances made me flexible to work at any hour I have available. But I still work better at night.

And that's all. I hope you have a good starting point with these ideas.

Atrévete a saber. Investiga. Pregunta.
